Door Invasion Methods that Security Doors Prevent

Some homeowners are particularly concerned about burglary or other home invasion risks, especially if they’ve taken place in the past, and sadly the most common entry point for such home invasions is also the most notable one: A main entry door, whether it’s the front or rear of the home. For those especially concerned here, however, a high-quality modern security door can make a huge difference.

At Price’s Guaranteed Doors, we’re happy to offer the very best garage door, entry door and other door services for clients in Boise, Nampa and other parts of Idaho – including security doors made from the highest-quality materials. Here are some of the most common front-door invasion methods that burglars and others might attempt to use to get into entry doors, plus how a great security door prevents against these risks.

The Simple “Smash and Twist”

One of the most common burglary or other home invasion methods remains one of the oldest: Simply smashing the door, then using a crowbar or other tool to twist the lock until it breaks. Especially if the burglar is aware that no one is home, and particularly if they’ve done their research and realized there’s no home security system to alert the police, this method can be effective.

However, modern security doors with reinforced frames and entry points – including high-strength deadbolts – are designed to prevent against this kind of “smash and twist” attack. With a great security door in place, not only is it much harder for any would-be intruder to use this method, but if they do manage to break the door down, it will be much more difficult for them to actually twist and gain entry.

The Knock-and-Wait Method

Another common entry point used by burglars is simply knocking on the door – with a distraction story ready to go – then waiting outside until someone opens up. They will then often use one of a few methods to try and get inside if no one answers, such as picking the or, as noted above, to smash and twist the lock.

A modern security door with a great deadbolt system can make this kind of attack far less effective, since it will be much harder – if not impossible – for any burglar to pick or otherwise bypass the high-strength locks typically found on these doors. This sort of door also signals to any burglars that the home is “protected,” which might be enough to dissuade them and make them move on.

Use of a “Bump Key” (Master Door Opener)

One modern tool some thieves or other intruders might use to gain entry is a so-called “bump key” or master door opener. These tools are basically just keys that have been filed down in certain ways: When inserted into a lock and then tapped with an object (like a hammer), they can cause the pins within the lock to move up, thereby unlocking the door.

However, with a great security door, this kind of attack is usually not possible. High-quality doors often contain what are called “bump-proof” locks, which use a series of pins or other mechanisms that make it nearly impossible for any such tool to open the door.

Watching for Retrieval of “Hidden Key”

Some of the more patient burglars out there will sometimes try to gain entry through the use of a hidden key. This is often done by staking out a home and watching for an opportunity – such as when someone in the household leaves, or even when they simply go outside and forget their keys – that allows the burglar to locate and then retrieve any spare “hidden” keys.

With modern security doors, though, hidden and secondary keys often aren’t even necessary. This is because many of these doors use a combination-style lock, where no key is actually necessary – but entry still requires the correct code. That makes it impossible for anyone to simply find and retrieve a hidden key and gain entry.

As you can see, modern security doors are a great way to protect your home from burglars and other intruders. From preventing against “smash and twist” attacks to making it impossible for anyone to use a bump key or locate any hidden keys, these doors offer peace of mind knowing that your home is well-protected.
