
Choosing Windows for St. George Sun and Desert Heat
Most window advice is built around keeping heat in during a cold winter. In St. George, the problem runs the other way. Every window carries a rating called the solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC. It measures how much of the sun’s heat passes through the glass, on a scale from 0 to 1. A lower number means less heat comes in. In a cold northern climate, a higher SHGC can be helpful because you want some free solar warmth in winter. Others are spectrally selective, designed to block the sun’s heat and UV while keeping the view clear, which is exactly what a hot, sunny climate calls for.

You have probably seen it in older St. George homes: a couch or a floor that is two different colors where a rug or a sunbeam sat for years. Quality low-E glass blocks a large share of UV along with the heat, which protects your interior as much as your energy bill. Panes matter less here than the coating
