Needs Reprogramming
Have you begun to notice that your garage door’s keypad will close the door successfully, but will not open it? This is often due to a need to reprogram the keypad itself.
To do this, you’ll want to start by pressing and releasing the learn button on your garage door opener until its indicator light turns on. Then, press the code number that you’d like to use on your garage door’s keypad. Finally, press the same code number once more to finish programming it.
(This method may vary somewhat between brands and models, so feel free to check your user manual for the exact steps you should take.)
Battery Issues
Another common issue that can cause your keypad to stop working is a drained or dead battery. With most modern garage door keypads – especially those that are solar powered – this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, battery-powered keypads will need to have their batteries replaced periodically.
To check and replace the battery, you’ll want to start by unscrewing the cover of your keypad and locating the battery inside. Once you’ve located it, remove it and replace it with a new one of the same size (as indicated on its surface). Then, screw back on the cover and try to use your keypad a few times.
Wiring Trouble
In other cases, if your keypad does not respond to any of the steps above, it may be due to wiring problems. A loose or corroded wire may be preventing the keypad from sending a signal back to your garage door opener.
To troubleshoot this on your own, you’ll want to start by checking that all wires are securely attached and not showing any signs of corrosion or damage. If you find any, you may need to contact a professional for repair, as wiring can be dangerous to work with. Physical Damage or Tampering

In these cases, your remedy approach will depend heavily on the specific damage. If it’s extensive, you’ll likely need to replace the device entirely – and if you suspect tampering or unauthorized access, you should reset your code number immediately.
Keypad is Simply Old
In other situations, a keypad may just be too old to function effectively. Garage door openers and entry systems can wear down over time, especially if they’re used frequently – so it’s important to pay attention to any signs of aging or malfunctioning that you may notice from yours.
If your garage door keypad is simply getting worn out, then replacing it with a new one may be the best way to restore its proper functionality.
Have a Secondary Entry Method
No matter what, even if your garage door keypad is functioning perfectly and has never experienced any issues, it’s still important to have a secondary entry method available. This could be an additional keypad or a physical copy of the key that opens your garage door.
This way, if your primary entry system fails unexpectedly – for whatever reason – you’ll always have another option available. Furthermore, if you ever need to grant access to someone else, such as a repair technician or family member, then having a backup entry method can make this much easier.
